Scripture: “Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts.” -Psalm 139:23
There are two types of people in this world: those who see the check engine light come on and immediately schedule an appointment… and those who take it as more of a suggestion. I would like to say I belong to the first group. I do not. In my defense, the car was still drivable. It wasn’t making any alarming noises—no clanking, no sputtering, no dramatic smoke signals. Just that small, glowing light on the dashboard, quietly trying to get my attention like a polite child raising its hand in class. And like any responsible adult, I glanced at it, I even acknowledged it… and then I kept driving.
Because surely, if it were serious, something else would happen, right? Something louder. Something more urgent. Something that felt worth interrupting my day. Days passed. Then weeks. The light remained faithful—steady, consistent, and completely unmoved by my indifference. At some point, I even got used to it. It became part of the scenery, like a dashboard decoration I didn’t remember choosing but had somehow accepted. Until one day, the car decided it had waited long enough. And suddenly, things were no longer optional.
Funny how that works, isn’t it? It made me think about how gently God often deals with us in a similar fashion. He doesn’t usually begin with loud interruptions. More often, it’s a quiet nudge, a small conviction, a thought that lingers just a little longer than usual. Nothing overwhelming—just enough to make us aware that something here needs attention. And if we are honest, we can become very skilled at doing exactly what I did with that light. We notice. We acknowledge. And then… we keep going. Not necessarily because we are being rebellious in some dramatic way, but because we are busy, preoccupied, and slightly convinced that if it were truly important, it would feel more urgent. Sound familiar?
But Scripture invites something different: “Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts” (Psalm 139:23). That’s not the prayer of someone waiting for a breakdown. That’s the prayer of someone willing to pull over before one happens. Because here’s the quiet truth: the check engine light was never the problem. It was the mercy. It was the warning that something unseen needed attention before it became something unavoidable.
And God, in His kindness, often works the same way. He cares about what’s happening beneath the surface. Those small, persistent nudges are not there to annoy us. They are there to keep us. So maybe the better response is not to wait for the noise. Maybe it’s to pay attention to the light.
