Recalculating… Please Wait

Scripture: “Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.” -Proverbs 3:5

There’s something about a GPS voice that sounds calm even when your life choices are not. “Turn left.” OOPS! You did not turn left. “Recalculating.” No judgment. No sigh. No “I told you so.” Just a patient recalibration, as if to say, Alright… let’s try this again. I have had moments—purely hypothetical, of course—where I was absolutely convinced I knew a better route. A shortcut. A quicker way. A more efficient plan that somehow involved three extra turns, mild confusion over going the wrong way on a one way street, and eventually ending up somewhere that was not even remotely close to where I intended to be.

What strikes me is not that I missed the turn. It’s how many chances I was given afterward. The GPS never says, “Well, you have ignored me three times, so you’re on your own now missy!” It simply adjusts again and again until I’m back on track. That makes me think about the way the Lord leads us. We are given direction—sometimes clearly, sometimes quietly—and occasionally, we decide we have a better idea. We may not say it out loud, but our choices say it well enough: I think I’ll go this way instead.

And yet, God doesn’t abandon us at the first missed turn. “The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD” (Psalm 37:23), and even when those steps wander, His mercy continues to call us back. Being off route does not mean being beyond reach. So the next time life feels like a series of wrong turns and unexpected detours, remember that God is not flustered. He is not scrambling to fix what we have broken. He is faithfully working a way forward, patiently drawing us back into His will.

If this Fireside Chat warmed your spirit and sparked fresh resolve to live what you believe, fan that flame with Scripture—“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly” (Colossians 3:16). Pull a little closer to the Light, and carry it into the week ahead.
