Still Under Construction

“Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ.” — Philippians 1:6

Most of us like to think we’re making good progress in our Christian walk. We learn to be patient, extend grace, and speak kindly. Then someone cuts us off in traffic, takes the parking spot we were clearly already spiritually claiming, or says that one thing that pushes the exact button we were convinced had been disconnected years ago.

Moments like these have a way of revealing what is still hidden in the heart.

God doesn’t allow those moments so we can excuse an impatient response by saying, “Well, nobody’s perfect.” He allows them to lovingly uncover the places where His transforming grace is still at work. What surfaces in those moments is not something to justify—it is something to surrender.

That is why Philippians 1:6 is such an encouraging promise. God never asks us to pretend we have already arrived. Instead, He assures us that the good work He began in us is one He faithfully intends to finish.

When we fall short, our first response should not be to defend ourselves or minimize what happened. It should be to come honestly to Christ, confess our failure, receive His forgiveness, and ask Him for strength to respond differently the next time. Every sincere confession becomes another opportunity for His grace to reshape our character.

Spiritual growth rarely happens in giant leaps. More often, it is found in those quiet moments when we recognize our need, yield our hearts again, and allow the Holy Spirit to replace impatience with patience, pride with humility, and irritation with kindness.

What wonderful hope there is in knowing that God has not given up on us. The Master Builder is still at work, faithfully shaping hearts that reflect the character of Jesus.

Our goal is never to become comfortable with our shortcomings. It is to become increasingly uncomfortable with anything that does not look like Christ—and increasingly grateful that His mercy is new every morning as He continues the work He has promised to complete.

If this Fireside Chat warmed your spirit and sparked fresh resolve to live what you believe, fan that flame with Scripture—“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly” (Colossians 3:16). Pull a little closer to the Light, and carry it into the week ahead.
