The Poverty of Plenty

“He that loveth silver shall not be satisfied with silver; nor he that loveth abundance with increase: this is also vanity.” -Ecclesiastes 5:10

Have you ever noticed how quickly “just a little more” quietly becomes “still not enough”?

Solomon certainly did. Few people have ever possessed more wealth, influence, opportunities, or accomplishments than he did. If anyone could speak honestly about whether earthly abundance can satisfy the human heart, it was Solomon. Yet his conclusion is startling: the person who loves silver will never be satisfied with silver.

I think most of us are wired to assume that abundance produces contentment. However, Solomon says the opposite can happen. The more the heart depends upon earthly treasure for satisfaction, the more impossible satisfaction becomes.

Perhaps that’s because our hearts were never designed to be filled with things.

There’s a God-shaped space within every person that money cannot purchase, success cannot achieve, and possessions cannot occupy. We may decorate that empty place with accomplishments, hobbies, relationships, or bigger bank accounts, but none of them can become what only Christ was meant to be.

The irony is that contentment doesn’t grow by accumulating more; it grows by appreciating the Giver. Paul learned this secret when he wrote, “I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content” (Philippians 4:11). His circumstances changed often, but the Source of his joy never did.

The greatest riches are not measured by what fills our hands, but by what fills our hearts.

God is not opposed to blessing His children. Throughout Scripture He generously provides for their needs. The danger comes when His gifts quietly take the place of the Giver. A full wallet can never compensate for an empty soul. After all, the One who made the heart is the only One who can truly satisfy it.

If this Fireside Chat warmed your spirit and sparked fresh resolve to live what you believe, fan that flame with Scripture—“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly” (Colossians 3:16). Pull a little closer to the Light, and carry it into the week ahead.
