The Fragrance of Our Influence

“Dead flies cause the ointment of the apothecary to send forth a stinking savour…” — Ecclesiastes 10:1

I have always found this to be one of the most vivid illustrations in Scripture. An apothecary would carefully blend fragrant oils and costly spices into a beautiful perfume. Every ingredient was chosen with care, yet it only took a few dead flies to spoil the fragrance.

Isn’t that often how influence works?

Most homes, friendships, and churches are not damaged by one dramatic event. More often, it’s the little things that are allowed to remain. A critical spirit. A sarcastic remark. An unforgiving attitude. The need to always have the last word. Individually they may seem insignificant, but over time they begin changing the atmosphere around us.

Solomon’s illustration isn’t really about the flies. It’s about the fragrance.

Fragrance lingers.

Long after the perfume bottle has been put away, its scent remains. In much the same way, people may forget many of our words, but they often remember how we made them feel. Our attitudes leave an impression that lingers long after the conversation has ended.

This verse has prompted me to ask myself something. Instead of just wondering who the “flies” are in my life, I should also ask, Lord, what fragrance am I leaving behind?

When people spend time with me, do they leave feeling encouraged? Do my words point them to Christ? Does my spirit make it easier for others to see His patience, kindness, and grace?

Jesus never entered a room without changing its atmosphere. The weary found rest in Him, the broken found hope, and sinners found both truth and mercy. Even when His words brought conviction, His purpose was always redemption.

By God’s grace, may my life leave behind the sweet fragrance of Christ rather than the lingering odor of self. After all, the influence we leave on others is often remembered far longer than the words we speak.
