The Measure of Success

Scripture Focus: “Rest in the LORD, and wait patiently for him: fret not thyself because of him who prospereth in his way, because of the man who bringth wicked devices to pass.” — Psalm 37:7

Waiting is difficult enough. Waiting while it appears that those who ignore God are getting ahead can test our faith in ways we never expected.

Most of us have experienced moments when life simply didn’t seem to add up. We try to conduct our business honestly, yet someone willing to bend the rules gets the promotion. We choose integrity, while another person seems to prosper through deception. We seek God’s counsel before making decisions, yet someone who gives little thought to His will appears happier, wealthier, or more successful. If we’re not careful, we can begin asking questions David understood all too well: Lord, is obedience really worth it? Does following Your way actually make a difference?

That is precisely why the second half of Psalm 37:7 is so important. David doesn’t merely tell us to wait patiently. He tells us not to become consumed by the apparent success of those who have chosen another path. He knew that one of the greatest enemies of contentment is comparison. The moment we begin measuring God’s faithfulness by someone else’s circumstances, our peace quietly begins to unravel.

What makes David’s counsel especially meaningful is that these words come from experience. Later in this very psalm he writes, “I have been young, and now am old” (Psalm 37:25). These are not the observations of someone untouched by hardship. David had spent years fleeing from Saul, hiding in caves while a corrupt king sat comfortably on the throne. He knew what it felt like to watch the wrong person appear to be winning.

Yet time taught him something that only years of walking with God could reveal.

Temporary success is not the same as lasting blessing.

God’s delays are not His absence.

And appearances are rarely the whole story.

We live in a culture that measures success by visible results—income, influence, recognition, followers, accomplishments. God often measures something entirely different. He looks at faithfulness when no one is applauding. He values integrity when compromise would be easier. He delights in hearts that continue trusting Him even when obedience seems to be yielding fewer rewards than taking shortcuts.

That is why David begins with the words, “Rest in the LORD.” He doesn’t tell us to rest in favorable circumstances or in quick answers. He tells us to rest in the unchanging character of God. Our confidence is not built upon what we see happening around us but upon what we know to be true about the One who is leading us.

Waiting, then, becomes much more than marking time until God acts. It becomes an opportunity to deepen our confidence in His wisdom. While we are tempted to focus on what others have gained, God is quietly accomplishing something of eternal value within us. Character is being refined. Faith is taking deeper root. Trust is learning to stand without demanding immediate explanations.

God’s way is still the best way, even when it appears to be the slower one.

History—and eternity—have proven that.

1. Have you ever found yourself comparing your journey with someone who seemed to prosper while disregarding God’s ways? How did it affect your trust in the Lord?
2. What circumstances are currently tempting you to question whether obedience is worth the wait?
3. How does remembering David’s own life strengthen your confidence in God’s faithfulness during seasons of waiting?
4. What would it look like for you to truly “rest in the Lord” instead of measuring your life by the apparent success of others?

Prayer Prompt:
Heavenly Father, forgive me for the times I have measured Your faithfulness by what I see around me instead of by who You are. When I am tempted to envy those who seem to prosper apart from You, remind me that Your ways are higher than mine and Your purposes reach far beyond what I can presently see. Teach me to rest in You, to wait with confidence, and to remain faithful even when obedience seems costly. Strengthen my heart to trust that no act of faithfulness is ever unnoticed by You. Keep my eyes fixed on Christ, and help me value eternal treasures above temporary success. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
