Scripture: “Thou art my hiding place and my shield: I hope in thy word.” — Psalm 119:114
I was never especially gifted at hide-and-seek.
For one thing, I laughed.
For another, I once believed that standing behind a curtain made me completely invisible, even though my feet were clearly sticking out. Apparently, childhood logic insists that if I cannot see you, then no one can see me either.
As adults, we have become more sophisticated, of course.
We hide behind “I’m fine.”
We hide behind busy schedules, locked doors, long naps, carefully changed subjects, and the sudden need to reorganize a drawer when a difficult conversation is approaching.
Our feet may not be showing beneath the curtains anymore, but sometimes our worries are.
There are burdens we don’t know how to explain, disappointments we would rather not name, and fears we keep tucked into the quieter corners of the heart. We put on a fake smile, answer politely, and keep moving, while hoping nobody looks too closely.
However, God always sees… everything. Nothing is hidden from Him.
He carefully draws back the curtain, not to embarrass us. But to invite us to come out from the flimsy hiding places we’ve built and find refuge in Him instead.
“Thou art my hiding place and my shield: I hope in thy word.”
There’s a great difference between hiding from the One who loves us and hiding in Him.
One leaves us cramped behind the curtains, trying not to breathe too loudly.
The other gives the soul room to rest.
God already knows what we are carrying. He knows the part we have explained badly, the part we have told no one, and the part we barely understand ourselves. Still He says, “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28).
The safest hiding place is the one where we no longer have to pretend we are hidden.
We are fully seen, fully known, and still welcomed. And thankfully, God has never once mistaken our feet sticking out beneath the curtain for a convincing disguise.
If this Fireside Chat warmed your spirit and sparked fresh resolve to live what you believe, fan that flame with Scripture—“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly” (Colossians 3:16). Pull a little closer to the Light, and carry it into the week ahead.
