The Presence That Brings Peace

Scripture Focus: “These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.” ~ John 16:33

If happiness depended upon a trouble-free life, very few people would ever experience it for long.

Jesus never promised His followers smooth roads, perfect health, overflowing bank accounts, or relationships without heartache. In fact, He said just the opposite: “In the world ye shall have tribulation.” The Christian life has never been about escaping life’s difficulties; it is about discovering the One who walks beside us through them.

There is a profound difference between happiness that depends on circumstances and the deep joy Christ gives. Circumstances change like the weather. One day the sun is shining, and the next dark clouds roll in. But Christ remains the same yesterday, today, and forever.

Notice where Jesus places our peace. He doesn’t say we will find it in favorable circumstances. He says, “In me ye might have peace.” Our peace is not found in the absence of problems but in the presence of the Problem Solver.

I sometimes think of storms at sea. The anchor doesn’t stop the wind from blowing or the waves from crashing. Its purpose is to keep the ship from drifting. Christ is that Anchor for the soul. Trials may shake us, but they need not move us from our confidence in Him.

Perhaps that is why Paul could sing in prison, Habakkuk could rejoice when the fields were barren, and countless believers through the centuries have found hope in their darkest hours. Their joy was never rooted in what was happening around them, but in the Savior who never left their side.

The world says happiness comes when our problems disappear. Jesus says peace comes when we remain in Him. One promise is uncertain because life is unpredictable. The other is unshakable because Christ has already overcome the world.
