Before the Answer Comes

Sometimes two simple passages can steady the whole heart if we let them settle in. “And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us… we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him” (1 John 5:14–15). And alongside it, like a gentle companion: “Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth” (3 John 2). One speaks of being heard. The other speaks of being made whole. And somewhere between those two, peace begins to take root.

Something deeply calming happens when you know you are heard—not halfway, not distractedly, but fully known in the asking. Heaven is not silent toward you. It is attentive. Leaning in, even. But this confidence is not built on getting everything we ask for in the way we imagine. It is built on something far stronger: God hears us according to His will. And His will is not a cold filter—it is a loving framework. It protects, refines, and aligns. It ensures that what reaches us has already passed through perfect wisdom.

This is where the heart begins to shift. Prayer stops feeling like trying to convince God, and starts becoming a way of coming into agreement with Him. Instead of striving to be heard, we begin to rest in the fact that we already are. And when the heart rests, it listens differently. It trusts differently. It even waits differently.

Then the second verse steps in, almost like the Lord gently saying, “Let Me show you what I’m really after.” Not just answered requests—but a prospering soul. Because everything flows from there. When the soul is nourished, anchored, and alive in Him, it carries a kind of quiet strength into every other area—health, decisions, relationships, even the way we handle delay.

We often chase the outward signs of blessing, but God starts inward. He tends the roots. And if the roots are strong, the life above the surface can weather far more than we think. That’s why soul prosperity isn’t separate from answered prayer—it’s actually part of the answer.

A quiet beauty unfolds when we realize God is not just responding to what we ask—He is shaping what we ask. Gently, patiently, He brings the heart into rhythm with His own. So that over time, what we desire and what He desires begin to sound less like two different voices… and more like one.

And that’s where confidence becomes unshakable.

Not because every outcome looks the way we planned, but because we trust the One who holds the outcome. The One who hears. The One who knows. The One who loves too deeply to answer carelessly.

So in that stillness before the answer comes, something settles. You are heard. You are being shaped. And you are being led—carefully, intentionally, and always in love.

Heavenly Father,
Thank You that Your Word gives such steady assurance—“if we ask any thing according to thy will, thou hearest us.” Let that truth settle deep, not just in my mind, but in my spirit. Shape my desires so they align with Yours, and teach me to trust that what You give, what You withhold, and what You delay are all working together in wisdom I cannot yet see.

Lord, You have said, “Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.” So begin there in me. Prosper my soul. Strengthen what is weak, quiet what is anxious, and root me so deeply in You that my confidence is no longer shaken by circumstances.

Help me to pray with faith, to wait with peace, and to walk with quiet assurance that I am heard, known, and lovingly guided. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

If this Fireside Chat warmed your spirit and sparked fresh resolve to live what you believe, fan that flame with Scripture—“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly” (Colossians 3:16). Pull a little closer to the Light, and carry it into the week ahead.
