Speed Limits and Holy Timing

Scripture: “To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven.” -Ecclesiastes 3:1

Speed limits are interesting little signs. They stand there quietly on the side of the road, offering what they believe is helpful guidance, while half the drivers around them appear to be treating them like mild suggestions. There is always someone flying past as if they’re late for the parting of the Red Sea, and someone else driving so slowly you begin to wonder if they’re sightseeing through the book of Numbers. Meanwhile, the rest of us are just trying to obey the sign, avoid the ticket, and not develop unchristian thoughts in traffic.

I have learned that speed limits are not only about restriction; they’re also about protection. They take into account curves, road conditions, neighborhoods, visibility, and dangers I may not see from where I sit. Of course, when I am in a hurry, I don’t always appreciate that. I want the road to cooperate with my schedule. I want green lights, open lanes, and no one in front of me who believes braking is a hobby. But the limit is not there to frustrate me. It’s there because somebody knows something about the road that I might not know.

That’s where the lesson quietly slips in. God’s timing can feel like a speed limit when our heart is in a hurry. We want answers now, growth now, open doors now, healing now, clarity now. But Scripture says, “To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven” (Ecclesiastes 3:1). God is careful because He sees the whole road. He knows when we are ready, when others are ready, what needs to be prepared, and what dangers would meet us if we rushed ahead too soon.

Waiting on God is not easy, especially when we feel ready to move. But sometimes the waiting is not a delay; it’s mercy with a posted sign. It keeps us from speeding into what we cannot yet carry. It slows us down long enough to notice Him, to mature, to pray, to surrender, and to let His Word settle deeper than our impatience. God is never late, even when our nerves are checking the clock every three minutes. His timing is not meant to punish us. It’s meant to preserve us.

So the next time life feels slower than expected, maybe breathe a little before spiritually tailgating the Lord. He knows the road. He knows the turns. He knows the season. Our part is to trust His pace, even when everything in us wants to press the gas and announce, “Lord, I believe we could make better time.” He is not just getting us there. He is getting us there safely, wisely, and in His perfect time.

If this Fireside Chat warmed your spirit and sparked fresh resolve to live what you believe, fan that flame with Scripture—“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly” (Colossians 3:16). Pull a little closer to the Light, and carry it into the week ahead.
