The Company You Keep

Some voices teach your heart to flinch.
They point to the height of the walls,
measure the shadows,
count the reasons you should turn back.
Their words sound practical,
but fear is always practical
when it wants to be obeyed.

Other voices speak more softly.
They do not deny the giants—
they simply refuse to enthrone them.
They lift your eyes past what roars
to the God who does not need to raise His voice
to be mighty.

Walk long enough with those who tremble,
and your steps begin to hesitate.
Your prayers shrink.
Your courage learns the language of caution.
Soon you are guarding yourself
instead of following God.

But walk with the wise,
and something steadier takes root.
They remind you of what has already been done—
seas parted, stones rolled away,
promises kept when hope had gone silent.
They speak of faith not as theory,
but as a road they have already walked.

Choose those who name God
before they name the danger.
Choose companions who teach your heart
to remember rather than recoil.
Because fear is contagious—
but so is faith.

If this poem stirred something in your heart, remember that the deepest roots grow from God’s Word itself. “Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee” (Psalm 119:11). If you’d like simple, practical help in tucking Scripture into memory…
