When the Sky Breaks Open

Inspired by Luke 21:36 “Watch ye therefore, and pray always, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass, and to stand before the Son of man.”

Watch—
for the shadows grow long,
and the air hums with the tremor of things unseen.
The earth shifts underfoot,
and the nations hold their breath,
knowing not what Hand is moving in the dark,
nor whose mercy still delays the end.

Pray—
not with the casual lips of the unconcerned,
but with the voice of one who feels the storm in his bones,
who tastes the rain before it falls,
who hears the sea and the waves roaring,
and clings to the Rock while the horizon burns.

The night will deepen before it breaks;
the shaking will come before the trumpet’s call.
And only those whose garments are washed
in the blood of the Lamb
will find their footing when the mountains flee,
when every other refuge fails.

O Lord, count me worthy—
not for the works my hands have done,
but for the mercy my soul has clung to
in the long vigil of faith,
for the grace that taught my heart to watch
and would not let me sleep.

For when the sky is rent like a veil,
and the Son of man stands in His glory,
let my eyes not drop in shame,
nor my knees collapse in terror,
but let me stand—
awed, trembling,
yet unafraid—
before the Face that has watched for me
through every night,
and waited for this meeting
from the foundation of the world.

If this poem stirred something in your heart, remember that the deepest roots grow from God’s Word itself. “Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee” (Psalm 119:11). If you’d like simple, practical help in tucking Scripture into memory…
